Emily strongly supports the right of every individual to live her or his true and authentic life, regardless of gender identity, expression, or sexual orientation.

LGBTQ Pride Event, Sept 29th, Plattsburgh

As your State Senator, she will work every day to protect the rights of all persons to live free of discrimination, harassment, hate speech, and violent acts. Emily will fight to safeguard those rights and protections already afforded the LGBTQI+ community and to extend protections not yet guaranteed under New York State Law.

Specifically, Emily will work for:

  • Passage of GENDA, the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act, which extends non-discrimination protections to the transgender community and amends the hate crimes provisions of all existing NYS laws.
  • Legislation that outlaws LGBTQI+ conversion therapy, which seeks to change a person’s sexual orientation from homosexual to heterosexual, or gender identity from transgender to cis-gender.
  • Legislation allowing same sex LGBTQI+ couples to pursue adoption without fear of discrimination from adoption services, agencies or other organizations, religiously affiliated or not.
  • Legislation requiring LGBTQI+ healthcare coverage for medical and mental health services at any facility or agency, religiously affiliated or not.
  • Regulation of all New York insurance providers that requires them to cover LGBTQI+ related healthcare expenses, including gender reassignment surgery, regardless of religious affiliation.
  • More education concerning LGBTQI+ issues, including the transgender, gender non-binary, and intersex communities.
  • Regulations that protect LGBTQI+ people in elder care facilities, including issues of physical safety.
  • Regulations that ensure LGBTQI+ partners can inherit property and assets upon the death of either partner.
  • Safeguards to marriage equality in NYS.
  • Regulations that protect LGBTQI+ people in the legal system including the physical safety of LGBTQI+ people in New York State prisons and County jails.
  • Legislation that protects LGBTQI+ people from harassment or discrimination, including in homeless shelters.
  • Passage of the Dignity for All Students Act – DASA – to tighten protections for all marginalized students.
  • Expanding and extending DASA to include NYS colleges and universities.
  • Expanding LGBTQI+ community services to include needed support and guidance; chemical dependence and substance abuse support; behavioral, mental, and medical healthcare services; and queer spaces for LGBTQI+ youth, older adults, and people with disabilities.

I vow to pass GENDA
